SteriPEN’s Effectiveness Against Cryptosporidium

Cryptosporidium is a very dangerous microbe. According to the Center for Disease Control, there have been at least six outbreaks in US public water supplies. The worst was in 1993 when Cryptosporidium entered the public water supply in Milwaukee and killed 40 people, hospitalized 4,400 and made an estimated 400,000+ sick. People with suppressed immune systems like chemotherapy, transplant and HIV patients as well as infants and the elderly are particularly vulnerable to Cryptosporidium.

Cryptosporidium is a very durable microorganism. It is larger than viruses and bacteria and it has a hard “shell” that chemicals like iodine and chlorine have great difficulty treating. Traditionally, the most effective way to eliminate Cryptosporidium in water was to boil it for 10 minutes, but boiling requires both time and fuel and is not very convenient when travelling.

It is now known that Cryptosporidium is very vulnereable to the wavelength of ultra-violet light produced by the SteriPEN. The Ryerson University School of Occupational and Public Health conducted an independent study of the SteriPEN in November 2005 and found SteriPEN to be as effective as boiling water when used as directed.

In this study, SteriPEN eliminated Cryptosporidium in seconds; much faster than boiling or chemical treatments.

Using SteriPEN is easy. It operates with just one button. Push it once to purify 1.0 L (32 oz) of water and twice to purify 0.5 L(16 oz). Then just put the lamp in water until the light turns on and stir until the indicator light turns green. Simple.

SteriPEN is highly portable as it is small at under 7” long and SteriPEN is light at less that 225 g (8 oz) with batteries. All SteriPEN models fit easily into backpacks, briefcases, purses, or pockets so you can have safe drinking water anywhere you go.
